OZONE DAY CELEBRATION
HTN Live।
One of the many critical factors that make life feasible on earth is the shielding of our planet from the harmful fraction of solar radiations. In this, the ozone layer that forms a blanket in the stratosphere 15-30 Km above the earth's surface around the globe plays a very important role. In recognition of the global concern about ozone layer depletion and implementation of Montreal Protocol, September 16 is celebrated as the World Ozone Day every year. In compliance of the same, the Department of Zoology of Shia PG College observed the day with sincerity and enthusiasm. The UG & PG students studying Zoology were asked to assemble in the seminar room of the department where Dr TS Naqvi (HoD, Zoology) and other faculty members engaged them in various activities such as poster making, slogan writing etc to create awareness about this grave environmental problem in the society. The teachers explained the unique role of ozone layer in protecting the earth from a very harmful part of solar spectrum in the UV-B range. They also discussed the severity of various possible ill effects of UV radiation on human health which prominently include the potential risk of skin cancer. The biggest factor contributing to the ozone layer depletion was the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the atmosphere which are extensively used in refrigeration. Global initiatives have led to abandoning the production of CFCs which has resulted in gradual healing of the ozone hole over past decades. The students took a pledge to spread awareness about this problem in the society. A march of the students and teachers of the Zoology Department led by Dr TS Naqvi was also taken through the college campus to educate students and staff from other departments of the college too.
