‘SMRITIKA War Memorial’ in Lucknow Cantonment was in its resplendent glory today, where the brave soldiers of the three services of the Armed Forces, who gave the nation its biggest military victory on 16 December 1971, were remembered and honoured.
The day began with a solemn wreath laying ceremony at SMRITIKA War Memorial. Major General PP Singh from Headquarters Central Command accompanied by officers and soldiers of Lucknow garrison paid rich floral tributes and laid wreaths at SMRITIKA war memorial amidst soul stirring patriotic tunes played by the military band. The General Officer saluted the martyrs when the ‘Last Post’ was sounded and two minutes silence was observed.
On this day in 1971, the Chief of the Pakistani Forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi along with 93000 troops, surrendered to the allied forces comprising of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, led by General Jagjit Singh Aurora of India in Romna Race Course, now Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka after their defeat in the war. The war which commenced on 03 Dec 1971 and lasted only 14 days, stripped Pakistan of more than half of its population and nearly one-third of its army in captivity. The Indian Army personnel fought with exceptional valour in 14 days war on both eastern and western fronts and registered one of the most spectacular victory achieved ever in world military history.
