LIEUTENANT GENERAL JAGDEEP KUMAR SHARMA, CHIEF OF STAFF, CENTRAL COMMAND AWARDED THE COVETED ATI VISHISHT SEVA MEDAL

Lieutenant General Jagdeep Kumar Sharma, Chief of Staff, Central Command has been awarded the coveted Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in recognition of his distinguished services on the occasion of the 70thRepublic Day. Hailing from Village Nehran Pukhar, Tehsil Dehra ,Distt Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, Lt. Gen Sharma is the first Army officer from the region to have been elevated to the rank of a three star general and be awarded with the coveted Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
Lieutenant General Sharma was commissioned into the 9th Battalion of The Mechanised Infantry Regiment in June 1982 and had the distinction of commanding the same battalion from December 2002 to May 2005 in a Strike Corps. Lieutenant General Sharma has a glorious and outstanding operational career which includes his participation in ‘Operation VIJAY’, ‘Operation MEGHDOOT’, ‘Operation TRISHUL SHAKTI’, ‘Operation ORCHID’ and ‘Operation PARAKRAM’. He has attended many prestigious professional courses of the Army including the prestigious National Defence College Course in Delhi.
Lieutenant General Sharma assumed the appointment of Chief of Staff, Central Command on 27 May 2017. A dynamic leader and an astute military professional with vast experience of Command and Staff appointments at operational level had set out for himself a very pragmatic vision for contribution to the Central Army. He worked tirelessly for the task at hand to first consolidate what has been achieved so far and plan and execute development in all spheres in the vast command theatre.
The officer synergised his vast experience and intellect in exceptionally enhancing the operational effectiveness, Command intelligence apparatus and training. This was vividly evident during the Doklam crisis. His intellectual pursuit towards deeper study of our main adversaries and insightful interjections brought in realism in operational discussions which enable all, particularly formations under his command, to be more pragmatic.
Full of energy, self drive and buoyancy complemented with compassion and empathy, he immersed himself towards welfare of rank and file, veterans and Veer Nari’s. This resulted in settling of unprecedented number of pension cases and employment and efficient function of ECHS, Veterans and resettlement cells. The Veer Naris and Veterans have been vividly acknowledging this contribution in many forums.
The General officer had tenanted very important assignments of being the Additional Director General, Military Operations (Information Warfare) and made some unparalleled contribution in this field. His achievements as General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division have also been outstanding.
